MacLeod Of Harris Tartan Clan History

The two main branches of this distinguished clan are the MacLeods of Harris and the MacLeods of Lewis, and the name itself is thought to stem from 'children of the son of Leod'. MacLeods fought at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn.

The progenitor of the Clan was Leod, who gained possession of much of Skye, including the Cuillins, Harris and Lewis in the mid 13th century. Later tradition claimed that he was descended from the Norse Kings
